Painted at the end of the 15th century, by an unknown painter in Handakas, depicting Saint George on his spear killing the winged dragon, one of the most popular miracles of the saint, in the eastern province of Antalya, in the town of Alaya was reigned by the Serbian Christian warrior. In that city there was a terrible dragon who daily grabbed people or animals and devoured them. When the king failed to kill the dragon, according to his own command, everyone should send their child to eat the dragon. When his daughter's turn came, George the Great, still leader of Diocletian's military unit, offered to kill the Dragon if everyone, the King, Princess and people, embraced the Christian religion. After the dragon was exterminated, Saint George summoned Bishop Alexander and baptized all the people, king and lords, forty-five thousand in all.
He became one of the most venerated saints and megalo-martyrs in Christianity, and he has been especially venerated as a military saint since the Crusades.
In hagiography, as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and one of the most prominent military saints, he is immortalised in the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. His memorial, Saint George's Day, is traditionally celebrated on 23 April
